WEAR GREEN ON FRIDAYS DURING MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Want to help end the loneliness and stigma of mental illness? One way is to wear green on Fridays during May – National Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Sun Prairie Wellness Coalition (SPWC) is selling green tees promoting the message: “I wear green for mental health awareness.” T-shirts are available on the SPWC website at sunprairiewellnesscoalition.com. “But any green shirt will do!” says Janelle Vreugdenhil, SPWC Co-Director.

“Make it fun. Encourage green at the office, at school or just around town. It’s a small effort that will make a big difference in helping others know you are here to care, to listen, and to help.”

The green theme is part of the group’s month-long STIGMA FREE SP campaign encouraging open and honest conversation about loneliness, exclusion, and the challenges of mental health.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition each year.

“It could be someone you sit next to at work or school. Taking the time to see them as a person, and engage in conversation, increases the likelihood that they will talk about it, get help and get better,” Vreugdenhil added.

All proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts go to benefit mental health programming.
