Sun Prairie Police Department to participate in Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over winter holiday campaign

The Sun Prairie Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin and the nation during the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign from Friday, December 12 through New Year’s Day. The national campaign focuses on preventing tragedies during the winter holiday season by stepping up law enforcement patrols to get impaired drivers off the roads.

During the last holiday season, there were 403 crashes involving an impaired driver in Wisconsin. These crashes killed 9 people and injured 169 others. Locally, Sun Prairie Officers responded to 3 impaired driving crashes and made 7 OWI arrests during the holiday season. “

Crashes caused by impaired driving are preventable,” Sgt. Lefeber said. “We want to ensure everyone has a safe holiday season. Plan ahead and identify a safe ride home before celebrating to keep everyone safe on the roads.”

Alcohol and drugs can have a significant impact on a driver’s focus and ability to maintain control behind the wheel. Last year in Wisconsin, there were 5,978 alcohol-related crashes that killed 153 people. Alcohol contributed to more than a quarter of all traffic fatalities.

Wisconsin officers have special training to help combat impaired driving, including:
  • Over 8,000 police officers trained in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement to help detect and remove impaired drivers from the roads
  • Almost 400 highly trained Drug Recognition Experts, among the most in the nation
  • 36 multi-jurisdictional high-visibility OWI task forces operating around the state
Everyone can help with this effort:
  • If you plan to celebrate, identify a sober designated driver or find a safe alternative ride home. Never allow someone who is impaired to get behind the wheel.
  • If you suspect a driver is impaired, call 911. Provide as much detail as possible on the driver, vehicle and location.
  • Some bars and restaurants have programs to provide patrons a safe ride home. Use the safe ride program, public transportation or a rideshare service in your area.
  • Protect yourself and others every time you travel. Watch your speed, buckle up and phone down. Every trip. Every time.
