Press Release

From: Battalion Chief Mark Stevens
RE:     Structure Fire
Date:  01 March 2026

This afternoon at 1519, Sun Prairie Fire and EMS was dispatched to County Highway TT in the Town of Sun Prairie for reports of a structure fire.  Upon arriving on scene, it was observed that there was heavy grey and brown smoke coming from the roof and eave line of a combination barn and workshop.  A MABAS box alarm was called to bring additional resources to the scene.  Crews deployed multiple hose lines to contain the fire.  Extinguishment efforts were hampered by building instability due to fire damage, which made it difficult to access portions of the fire.  After approximately four hours, the fire was fully extinguished.  Firefighting efforts required the use of approximately 45,000 gallons of water.  The building sustained heavy fire damage to the attic/roof space and a small second story hay loft.  A nearby residential structure was unaffected by the fire.

No animals or people were injured in the fire.  The cause of the fire has not been determined and is still under investigation.

Sun Prairie Fire and EMS would like to thank all the responding mutual aid fire departments that assisted with the call.  These included: Madison, Marshall, Cottage Grove, Deerfield, Columbus, Waunakee, Waterloo, McFarland, Deforest, and Dane.  Also assisting were Deer-Grove EMS, Dane County Sheriffs, Alliant Energy, Dane County Com. Center, and the Red Cross.
