Jeff Hook Appointed Interim Chief of Police for Sun Prairie

The City of Sun Prairie is pleased to announce that Jeff Hook has been appointed as the Interim Chief of Police. The appointment was approved by the Police & Fire Commission on Wednesday, December 4. Hook will be stepping into the role with a strong background in law enforcement and extensive leadership experience.

Hook served as Chief Deputy in the Dane County Sheriff’s Office from 2010 to 2020, where he acted as Chief Operating Officer for the 586-person agency. In this position, he managed the department’s operating and capital budgets and spearheaded an organizational shift from autocratic leadership to a dispersed leadership model, resulting in collaboration and adaptability across the department. Additionally, he managed hiring and training processes, allocated staff resources, and addressed personnel matters such as discipline and grievances. His leadership ensured the department operated efficiently while meeting its public safety goals.

Prior to that, Hook served as Captain for the same agency from 2007 to 2010, managing operations in the Administrative and Law Enforcement Divisions. In this role, he provided mentorship and guidance to personnel, handled budget planning and oversight, and ensured compliance with contracts and statutory requirements.

His academic foundation includes dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Behavioral Sciences & Law and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which have informed his leadership approach and strategic decision-making throughout his career.

Hook will begin in late December, serving as the acting Chief of Police while the recruitment process for a permanent chief continues.
