City of Sun Prairie Plans Earth Month Activities under the Theme of 'Make Haste to Reduce Waste'

Earth Day, observed globally on April 22, serves as a poignant reminder to safeguard and conserve the environment. To recognize this time, the City of Sun Prairie will be expanding Earth Day into Earth Month that will last from March until the end of April! This extended series includes a creative lineup of activities and events for the community, connecting to the theme of ‘Make Haste to Reduce Waste’. Among the many exciting events planned, community members can look forward to kicking off this time with multiple presentations on waste reduction led by Rose Daily, Sustainability Coordinator.

Waste Reduction Presentations

Daily will lead three Waste-Focused Community Presentations throughout March and April. These sessions will cover essential topics, beginning with strategies for adopting a zero-waste lifestyle on Wednesday, March 6, featuring zero-waste door prizes generously donated by Green Life Trading Co. Following this presentation on Wednesday, March 13, the next session will focus on combating food waste, offering exclusive discount codes for the compost bin group buy. Wrapping up the series, participants can explore techniques to become recycling superstars on Wednesday, April 10. All presentations will be held at the Sun Prairie Public Library and begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. Community members will have many opportunities to practice waste reduction including taking part in the Compost Bin Group Buy.

Compost Bin Group Buy

Community members are encouraged to participate in this initiative, which offers high-quality compost bins recommended by experts. Orders can be placed until Thursday, April 18, with convenient pickups scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at the Sun Prairie Recycling Center. The compost bins are constructed from 100% recycled black plastic, specifically chosen for the ability to quickly absorb heat. Designed with user convenience in mind, these bins are easy to assemble and move around as needed. Their durable construction ensures they will withstand long-term use. Additionally, the bins are equipped with excellent ventilation to facilitate the aeration of organic material and have a capacity of 128 gallons. One of April’s major highlights will be Sun Prairie’s first Sustainable film series.

Sustainable Film Series

The City is excited to announce its inaugural sustainable film series, featuring three creative films centered on environmentalism. The first screening of 2040 will take place on Thursday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Westside Community Service Building. On Wednesday, April 17, starting at 5:30 p.m., the Sun Prairie Public Library will host a showing of WALL-E. Finally, A Plastic Ocean will be screened on Monday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Westside Community Service Building. Following each screening, attendees are invited to participate in a brief discussion. Popcorn will be provided for all guests.

“I am thrilled about the variety of opportunities for community engagement with the City, each other, and our environment throughout Earth Month,” said Daily. “I strongly encourage the Sun Prairie community to participate in these activities and events.”
