SUN PRAIRIE SECURES GRANT TO ENHANCE ROADWAY SAFETY
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. – The City of Sun Prairie was awarded $204,000 in federal funding from the US Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant to enhance safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The award comes from funding established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Sun Prairie is one of over 2,000 communities selected to receive a SS4A grant since the programs beginning in 2022.
“Sun Prairie has been a Vision Zero community for over five years, and this grant continues the City’s
commitment to making streets safer for everyone,” said Mayor Steve Stocker. “I want to thank the Office of the Secretary of US Department of Transportation for selecting Sun Prairie and helping us achieve safe trips home for everyone traveling through Sun Prairie.”
Funding from this grant will assist Sun Prairie in constructing temporary traffic calming to improve pedestrian safety along the City’s high-injury network with the goal of evaluating their effectiveness to create permanent installations in the future. In addition, the city will be completing a traffic study of the high-injury network to help identify additional safety improvements that can be made. The funding will also support creating a public outreach campaign oriented around speeding and overall traffic safety. These funds may be available by the end of 2026 and are likely to fund activities through the end of 2027 and possibly into 2028.
“Our goal is to reach zero by 2035, this grant gives us a boost in reaching that goal,” said Transportation
Coordinator David Salmon. “We are constantly designing safer streets, but this grant will help the City lay a new cornerstone in creating a culture of community well-being and safety. Safer road users is a key to the safe systems approach.”
Securing this grant furthers the City’s Vision Zero Safety Action Plan in 2025, and the Greater Madison MPO’s Regional Safety Action Plan, which reflect a shared commitment to achieving zero deaths and serious injuries and outlines strategies to get to zero. Sun Prairie will continue working with our regional partners towards Vision Zero in all of our respective transportation decisions, including through implementing this grant.
