SUN PRAIRIE’S NEW BIKE LOOP RIBBON CUTTING ON JUNE 6TH
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — The City of Sun Prairie has recently completed installation of wayfinding signage
for a 23-mile recreational bike loop. To celebrate this grand opening, we invite the community to join us
for an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday June 6th at 10:00 a.m. The ribbon cutting will take
place during Sun Prairie’s Farmers Market at the intersection of Market St and Linnerud Dr. Mayor Steve
Stocker, Transportation Coordinator David Salmon, and Sun Prairie Moves will speak before officially
opening the loop to the community.
Visions of a recreational bike loop in Sun Prairie first emerged in parks plans dating back to the 1980’s.
More recently, the alignment of the loop was made formal in Sun Prairie in Motion – Active
Transportation Plan adopted in 2023 the same year that grant funding was secured to install wayfinding
signage. Local bike advocates dreamed of Sun Prairie having a loop similar to the Lake Monona Loop or
the Capital City Trail Loop. Thanks to funding from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation –
Transportation Alternatives Program, Sun Prairie’s very own bike loop has become a reality.
Wayfinding signage has been installed throughout the loop to help riders navigate each turn. Sharedlane markings, or “sharrows,” have been painted onto the street where the loop navigates local
residential streets. The Sun Prairie loop connects some of Sun Prairie’s most aesthetic natural areas
including Sheehan Park, Madison’s Northeast Park, Wyndham Hills Park, Orfan Park, Stoneridge Estates
Park, and the Patrick Marsh Wildlife Area and the heart of Sun Prairie’s commercial and family
destinations including the Sun Prairie Library and Aquatic Center, Prairie Lakes Commercial Area, and
Downtown Sun Prairie.
“Dane County has a robust network of trails which is great for bicycle enthusiasts and for local
businesses. The Loop puts Sun Prairie on the map as a destination for folks looking to enjoy a bike ride,
to stop for a bite to eat or something to drink, and to get to know how great Sun Prairie is,” said David
Salmon, Transportation Coordinator for the City of Sun Prairie. “Beyond the benefits to the local
economy, the loop is for residents of Sun Prairie! This is a resource that residents can take advantage of
year-round for years to come.”
The ribbon cutting ceremony will be hosted by the City of Sun Prairie. Take time before the ceremony
beings to enjoy the Sun Prairie Farmer’s Market. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to join
the Sun Prairie Bicycle Club on an inaugural ride on the loop. The pace will be slow to moderate and will
include a couple stops on the loop to highlight businesses taking part in the Bicycle Benefits program.
