IT Support Specialist (LTE)

The City of Sun Prairie seeks an IT Support Specialist to join our team of Information Technology Professionals! This position is considered limited-term employment (LTE) for one year, working 20 hours per week. In this position, you’ll play a key role in providing end user support for a diverse group of almost 200 City staff and emergency services personnel in numerous locations throughout the City. The ideal candidate will enjoy implementing new technologies and have the ability to interact with and provide instruction to end-users of varying skill levels.

Essential Job Functions

  • Installs and configures desktop operating systems and applications.
  • Troubleshoots desktop operating systems and application problems using internal guides and materials, or by contacting vendors.
  • Assists end users with operating systems and applications.  
  • Installs, configures, and troubleshoots new and replacement end user hardware: computers, monitors, peripherals, and mobile phones.
  • Assists in the identification of computer training needs, and shares those needs with the IT Director. Provides informal training when appropriate.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of procedures and policies for all city data processing operations.
  • Assists computer users in identifying and documenting system’s needs, changes, and improvements. Makes recommendations regarding software selection and implementation and its installation and configuration.
  • Provides basic internal network function information for new employees and assists in the onboarding process.
  • Informs department of opportunities to improve departmental current processes and protocols. 

Requirements of Work

  • Associate’s degree in computer science or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Two to three years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
  • Ability to interact with end-users of varying skill levels and to provide appropriate training and assistance.
  • Ability to provide direction/instruction both verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to document operations and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows Active Directory and Group Policy.
  • Basic knowledge of mobile phone operating systems: Apple iOS.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher.
  • Familiarity with Citrix, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft Intune/SCCM a plus!

  • Work is performed mostly in an office setting; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Working in cabling locations may be near high voltage, require the use of ladders, require work in confined or high spaces, and require exposure to natural elements. May also work in or around active building construction areas.
  • The employee must be able to travel to equipment locations throughout the city, in order to access equipment.
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
